Why I Play Minecraft

Their have been numerous Minecraft reviews that rightly give it acclaim for its many different features and its many different gameplay types. So while I personally really like Minecraft I did not see any reason to add one more review that would say nothing new. Fortunately, one of the more acclaimed features of Minecraft is the multiple ways/reasons to play it, so the following will be my attempt to review and explain the reason I play Minecraft.

In a sentence, I play Minecraft for the exploration and the fantastic visuals. I find while playing I tend to look towards the horizon, down a pit, or towards a cave and want to go their, to see what is there and experience what their is to experience there; Maybe climb a mountain side to look down on the surrounding environs or ride a waterfall down into the deep recesses of the earth to encounter monsters and lava flows. And what fantastic visuals, while they are somewhat simplistic close up, at a distance they ride a thin line between pixelistic and realistic where, I find, their is room for some imagination but it still looks amazing and real in its own right.

To showcase my point I will include some pictures from Minecraft with Terrain Mod installed and with many different settings. Click to enlarge.

Awe inspiring, isn't it?

  1. The terrain mod certainly makes it look more attractive than the screenshots I'd seen of this before. I'm still not drawn to the game somehow though - sandbox games just don't do it for me, I like to have objectives to reach.

BTW the "e" escaped from your title!

  2. Thanks, and I know what you mean (but hopefully more objective type gameplay will come in future updates).

And I agree the mod helps, but their are still very beautiful places without the mod you just have to spend time looking for them.

  4. Wow! I couldn't decide whether or not to get this game until now! Do you mind telling me the name of the mod you used and possibly a link?

  5. I am glad you liked my post.

    I thought I had, anyways.
    BiodomeTerrainMode
    and the settings thread.

The mod is somewhat strange to setup. If I remember correctly you are supposed to open up the main game executable (.jar file in this case). This file is located in something like (profile location)/appdata/.minecraft or a some subfolder of this. You can open it with winzip/7-zip or other similar program.
copy past the files into this file.

Then to add settings to the mod you use the save game folders. You first create a folder and put the given file into it, then you create a new world in Minecraft with the same name.

(at least this is what I remember having to do)

And I would say that even without this mod you will get similar views, except that with this mod you get a far higher frequency and more exaggerated beautiful landscapes then without.
